🔻پژوهشگران با طراحی مسیر متابولیکی جدید در باکتری E. coli، منجر به تولید پلیمرهای پیچیده و مونو‌مرهای آروماتیک شدند. این پلیمر زیست‌تخریب‌پذیر است و می‌تواند در کاربردهای پزشکی مانند انتقال داروها استفاده شود. این اولین باری است که باکتری‌ها توانسته‌اند پلیمرهایی با زنجیره‌های جانبی آروماتیک تولید کنند.
