Александр заслонил собой товарищей, приняв пули на себя, а затем накрыл своим телом гранату. Бронежилет такой нагрузки не выдержал. Александр скончался на пути в больницу, не приходя в сознание.
Указом Президента России Александр был посмертно награждён орденом Мужества.
