В группе от 18 до 24 лет четырёх и более детей хотели бы иметь 13% граждан, троих детей — 31%, двух — 37%. От 25 до 34 лет - 16%, 33% и 36%, соответственно.
В реальной жизни россияне 18-45 лет чаще планируют одного (25%) или двух (18%) детей; трех и более — лишь 11%.
Разрыв между желаемым и реальным числом детей в семье объясняется ограниченными материальными условиями, нехваткой ресурсов и времени, социальной и профессиональной адаптацией родителей, особенно женщин, после рождения детей. От каждой семьи в среднем страна «недополучила» одного ребёнка, отмечает ВЦИОМ.
Рождаемость в стране продолжает снижаться. Для воспроизводства населения суммарный коэффициент рождаемости должен быть не менее 2. В последний раз такой показатель фиксировался в конце 1980-х (2,23)
