Изображения с петухами Онагадори можно часто встретить в японском искусстве, именно так Оуэнс и познакомился с этими животными. У отца дизайнера была большая библиотека об азиатском искусстве, так что Рик с самого детства был под впечатлением от удивительных птиц. Сейчас они находятся на грани вымирания и в Японии насчитывается чуть боле 200 особей.
