Это отсылка к настоящей таксомоторной компании Checkers Taxi, которую основал эмигрант из России еврейского происхождения Залман Тамаркин, он же Морис Маркин. Checkers в переводе и означает шашки или шахматную доску. И рисунок шашечек на их автомобилях стал символом для обозначения такси в целом.
