В приходской летописи села Ивановского-Новосильцева обнаружил упоминание своего карельского предка:

Часовня в [карельской] деревне Новой устроена крестьянином той деревни Самуилом Ивановым с сыновьями, что видно из находящегося в часовне большого креста деревянного, на котором есть следующая надпись: «1714-го года месяца мая 2-го дня построил сей крест крестьянин Алексея Яковлевича Новосильцева деревни Новой Самуйла Иванов сын мельников с детьми своими с Васильем, с Парфёном, Семёном, по обещанию своему православным христианам на поклонение и родителям своим на поминовение ради вечного «покою во веки»».

Отца-мельника Самуйлы Иванова, согласно переписной книге 1678 года, звали Иван Вепша (Vepsä)
