Яблоки умирают, теряя высь,
В августе. Падают, еще золотые,
И начинают гнить, едва прикоснись,
Становясь землей, каждый раз впервые.

С луга идут коровы, тяжко мычат,
Девочка с хворостиной домой их гонит.
Подставляй под розовый след луча
Жаждущие теплоты ладони.

Так и мы, нелепые, катимся по земле,
Перекати-поле, яблоко золотое.
Падают звёзды, след очертив во мгле,
Смерть постигая собою.

Тело всепринимающей земли черно,
В августе она отдаёт плоды урожая,
Месяц жизни остался траве степной,
Но пока что она живая.

В августе чувствуешь жизнь острей и ясней,
Словно стоишь на краю огромного моря,
И поднимаются волны ушедших дней,
И захлестнут с головою вскоре.

Но пока что густо пахнет в степи трава,
И мычат коровы, и рыжего меду хочется,
И смертна, как яблоко, буйная твоя голова,
Но на смерти все не закончится.
