Объясняю почему. Национальность - это принадлежность к нации. Русская нация имперская, и потому состоит из нескольких и даже многих больших и малых народов, так исторически сложилось, а не из одного. По имени самого крупного, доминирующего своей культурой и языком, и численностью, так сказать государствообразующего народа, нация называется РУССКАЯ НАЦИЯ, а национальность в паспорте должна быть обозначена как РУССКАЯ национальность.
Вот и всё. В паспорте должны быть две графы: "национальность" и "народ". В графе "национальность": у всех одно и то же должно стоять: РУССКАЯ.
Если кто хочет заполнить графу "народ" - пиши свой народ. Русский, татарский, чеченский, осетинский, башкирский, бурятский и другие.
