I like to think that hundreds of years in the future a considerable amount of schizo conspiracy theorists will point at this and say that this is the evidence that their ancestors - in this context, us - used to know some sort of extraterrestrial form of life very well and even contact with it. People even do this now - e.g. nazca lines, pyramids and depictions of their gods within, fucking crop circles, poorly edited vids of UFOS OOOOOOOHHHH flying around... The only thing they overlook is that all of the aforementioned stuff, Egyptian gods included, is just a form of the most prominent form of media fit to man - shitpost😡

But it also offers open channels that enable a single user, or a group of users, to communicate with large numbers in a method similar to a Twitter account. This has proven to be both a blessing and a curse for Telegram and its users, since these channels can be used for both good and ill. Right now, as Wired reports, the app is a key way for Ukrainians to receive updates from the government during the invasion. After fleeing Russia, the brothers founded Telegram as a way to communicate outside the Kremlin's orbit. They now run it from Dubai, and Pavel Durov says it has more than 500 million monthly active users. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched Russia's invasion of Ukraine in the early-morning hours of February 24, targeting several key cities with military strikes. In addition, Telegram's architecture limits the ability to slow the spread of false information: the lack of a central public feed, and the fact that comments are easily disabled in channels, reduce the space for public pushback. Update March 8, 2022: EFF has clarified that Channels and Groups are not fully encrypted, end-to-end, updated our post to link to Telegram’s FAQ for Cloud and Secret chats, updated to clarify that auto-delete is available for group and channel admins, and added some additional links.
