Признаюсь, довольно поздно узнал, что Османы взяли звезду и полумесяц себе в символику где-то в конце 18 века. До этого же она скорее ассоциировалась с Византией/Римом. Ну а ранние следы уходят в глубь веков, есть монета третьего века до нашей эры из греческого Уранополиса.

Сейчас на небе Луна и Венера как раз образуют нечто похожее на этот символ.
