Редактор — это в первую очередь помощник книги.
Он ✅ продумывает новые книжные темы и форматы (фонтанирует идеями, причем придумывает так, чтобы это было реализуемо и становилось успешным), ✅ первоклассно умеет работать с пером — структурирует книгу, находит в ней неточности, правит текст так, что и читатель, и автор не придерутся.

Редактора не узнаешь на улице. Он может быть похож на героиню Дайан Китон Энни Холл (я знала несколько таких редакторов-менеджеров), и наоборот, предпочитает более яркую одежду.

Но очевидно одно — чаще всего редактора недооценивают. Для книги он делает очень много, но найти его имя в книжке не всегда легко. На обложку обычно ставят имя автора, иллюстратора, переводчика. А редактора можно найти в выходных сведениях. Да (!), некоторые издательства не удосуживаются и это сделать — редактора книги вообще не указывают.
