При внимательном рассмотрении верхних частей кучево-дождевых облаков (Cumulonimbus, Cb), принимающих вид наковален (incus), иногда можно заметить возвышающийся над наковальней выступ облака. В англоязычной литературе по метеорологии он называется overshooting top, или возвышающаяся вершина (на фото). Это облачное образование свидетельствует о наличии мощного восходящего потока внутри Cb, "пробивающего" тропопаузу и выходящего в стратосферу. С такими Cb обычно связаны наиболее сильные грозовые штормы. В тропиках возвышающиеся вершины Cb могут достигать высоты порядка 20 км. При этом температура в самой верхней части облака может быть ниже –90°С. Например, измерение температуры вершин Cb над Тихим океаном 29.12.2018 в 13:38 СГВ зафиксировало её рекордно низкое значение, равное –111°С на высоте 20,5 км над уровнем моря (см. ИК-изображение облака).
