Is killing people with downs syndrome eugenics?
This is a trick question I use to reveal how little people know about Eugenics.
The fact of the matter is that killing people with down syndrome has absolutely nothing to do with eugenics for two very obvious reasons.
Firstly, the primary cause of the disorder is the age of the mother, not genetics.
Secondly, more than 99% of downs do not reproduce and ~75% are born sterile. The way to target the disorder on a genetic level would be to prevent normal adults who have latent genes from reproducing.
The fact that most people fail to answer this question correctly is evidence that many people support positions they do not understand and cannot rationalize.
