О запуске проекта A321XLR (Xtra Long Range - сверхдальний) было объявлено на парижском авиасалоне в 2019 году, первый полет лайнер совершил в 2022. Airbus надеется сертифицировать A321XLR с двигателями CFM International LEAP-1A до конца этого года, версия с Pratt & Whitney PW1100G получит сертификат позже. Поставки самолета авиакомпаниям должны начаться в 2024.
A321XLR сможет преодолевать расстояние до 8700 км и находиться в воздухе до 11 часов. Пассажировместимость - 180-220 человек в двухклассной компоновке.
