Новая машина будет эксплуатироваться на участке Санкт-Петербург – Бабаево – Усть-Луга Октябрьской железной дороги. Гарантийное и сервисное обслуживание «Малахита» по контракту жизненного цикла будет осуществляться в депо «Бабаево», где расположен заводской региональный центр №15.
Грузоподъемность электровоза серии 3ЭС8 на 42% выше, чем у локомотивов предыдущего поколения. Он может вести поезда массой свыше 7000 тонн и длиной до 1 км в условиях горного рельефа и сложного климата. «Малахит» станет базовой платформой для линейки перспективного тягового подвижного состава, выпускаемого на «Уральских локомотивах».
