При этом кафтаны даровались не только оружейникам, но и металлургам, заводским служащим и даже сельским старостам. Торжественные вручения кафтанов происходили на Пасху. За всю историю было вручено 602 кафтана. В новое время сего почетного знака отличия были удостоены знаменитые конструкторы-оружейники М.Т. Калашников и В.А. Ярыгин.
