Ракета стартовала с космодрома в Техасе и должна была приводниться в Индийском океане. Через 8,5 минуты полета SpaceX потеряла связь с аппаратом. В задней части ракеты вспыхнул пожар, что привело к взрыву в небе над Багамскими островами. Это был седьмой испытательный полет.

Причиной неудачного запуска Starship стала утечка топлива или кислорода, заявил Илон Маск.

Несмотря на потерю Starship, компания смогла вернуть на Землю ускоритель Super Heavy — башня Mechazilla поймала часть корабля (видео 3). Это уже второе успешное возвращение ускорителя.

Starship — передовой проект в программе разработки многоразовой пусковой системы SpaceX, которая является частью плана по колонизации Марса.
