12 февраля 1942 года призван в Красную Армию. Рядовой Александр Кузьмич был отправлен на Восточный фронт - в Маньчжурию. Там до Дня Победы служил в составе 26-го особо-эксплуатационного железнодорожного полка «Д-500»: сопровождал составы с боеприпасами и живой силой. Ему посчастливилось быть лично знакомым с Константином Рокоссовским.
