Prince Arthur in Canada
Prince Arthur, son of Queen Victoria, first came to Canada in 1869. Between serving with the Montreal Rifle Brigade and defending Canada against the Fenian Raid of 1870, he embraced the Canadian climate and its winter sports. The Prince Arthur Toboggan Club was one of his patronages. During the early talks of Confederation there were some ideas of making Canada an “auxiliary” Kingdom of the Empire. One option was put forward by the former Irish Revolutionary, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, to have one of Queen Victoria’s younger sons set up as a King who would reign from Canada, Prince Arthur being the most favoured. This never came to be, however, but Prince Arthur would return to Canada as the Duke of Connaught in 1911 to take up the position of Governor General, the only British Prince ever to do so. Prince Arthur died in 1942 at the age of 91.

But Telegram's use as a one-way broadcast channel — which followers can join but not reply to — means content from inauthentic accounts can easily reach large, captive and eager audiences. What distinguishes the app from competitors is its use of what's known as channels: Public or private feeds of photos and videos that can be set up by one person or an organization. The channels have become popular with on-the-ground journalists, aid workers and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who broadcasts on a Telegram channel. The channels can be followed by an unlimited number of people. Unlike Facebook, Twitter and other popular social networks, there is no advertising on Telegram and the flow of information is not driven by an algorithm. As the war in Ukraine rages, the messaging app Telegram has emerged as the go-to place for unfiltered live war updates for both Ukrainian refugees and increasingly isolated Russians alike. To that end, when files are actively downloading, a new icon now appears in the Search bar that users can tap to view and manage downloads, pause and resume all downloads or just individual items, and select one to increase its priority or view it in a chat.
