«وكان أحمد يقول: "أكثرُ ما يخطئ الناسُ من جهة التأويلِ والقياسِ". وقال: "ينبغيْ للمتكلِّم في الفقه أن يَجْتَنِبَ هذين الأصلينِ: المجملَ والقياسَ". ومرادُه أنه لا يُعارِضُ بهما ما ثَبتَ بنص خاص، ولا يَعْمَلُ بمجردِهما قبلَ النظَرِ في النصوص والأدلةِ الخاصةِ المقيّدةِ. والمطلق يدخل في كلامه وكلام غيره من الأئمة كالشافعي وغيره في المجمل، لا يريدون بالمجمل مالا يُفهَم معناه كما يَظنه بعضُ الناس، ولا مالا يَستقل بالدلالة، فإن هذا لا يجوز الاحتجاج به بحالٍ.»
