Из расшифровки переговоров экипажа самолета с диспетчерами стало известно, что пилоты сами приняли решение не садиться в Грозном, а проследовать в Махачкалу, затем развернуться на Баку, после чего по неизвестной причине – в Актау.
Кроме того, из записей следует, что экипаж сообщал диспетчерам о столкновении с птицами. После этого капитан борта сообщил о потере управления и отказе гидравлики. Позднее экипаж сообщил диспетчерам в Ростове о взрыве кислородного баллона на борту. «У нас ситуация такая. Кислород заканчивается в кабине пассажирской. Значит, там взорвался кислородный, по-моему, баллон. А, значит, запах топлива идёт. А, пассажирам некоторым... а, значит, теряют сознание. Разрешите, мы пойдём на меньшей высоте?», - говорится в расшифровке.
Из расшифровки также следует, что в Актау все было готово к приему борта. Экипаж даже подтвердил, что наблюдает огни взлетно-посадочной полосы. Однако вскоре после разрешения на посадку, переговоры с бортом прервались.
