Listen to the 4th episode of the Bur’yan podcast dedicated to the Crimean Tatars' political history, resilience and struggle against soviet and russian repressive politics after the Crimean Tatars’ deportation in 1944.

The conditions Crimean political prisoners are facing are inhumane — they are being subjected to torture in russian prisons and are not provided with adequate medical help. According to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, a total of 10,018 violations of fundamental human rights were recorded in the occupied Crimea in 2017-2024, including 6,730 against members of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people. Moreover, this practice is spreading to the newly occupied territories of Ukraine — Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

The only way to stop human rights violations is full de-occupation of all Ukrainian lands.

At this point, however, Durov had already been working on Telegram with his brother, and further planned a mobile-first social network with an explicit focus on anti-censorship. Later in April, he told TechCrunch that he had left Russia and had “no plans to go back,” saying that the nation was currently “incompatible with internet business at the moment.” He added later that he was looking for a country that matched his libertarian ideals to base his next startup. The regulator took order for the search and seizure operation from Judge Purushottam B Jadhav, Sebi Special Judge / Additional Sessions Judge. Russians and Ukrainians are both prolific users of Telegram. They rely on the app for channels that act as newsfeeds, group chats (both public and private), and one-to-one communication. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Telegram has remained an important lifeline for both Russians and Ukrainians, as a way of staying aware of the latest news and keeping in touch with loved ones. In a message on his Telegram channel recently recounting the episode, Durov wrote: "I lost my company and my home, but would do it again – without hesitation."
