Oleksandra Matviichuk, a Kyiv-based lawyer and head of the Center for Civil Liberties, called Durov’s position "very weak," and urged concrete improvements. At its heart, Telegram is little more than a messaging app like WhatsApp or Signal. This has proven to be both a blessing and a curse for Telegram and its users, since these channels can be used for both good and ill. Right now, as Wired reports, the app is a key way for Ukrainians to receive updates from the government during the invasion. So, uh, whenever I hear about Telegram, it’s always in relation to something bad. What gives? Artem Kliuchnikov and his family fled Ukraine just days before the Russian invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video message on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces "destroy the invaders wherever we can."
