Данное усиление, возможно, связано с выбросом после вспышки C8.1, произошедшей 13 января в активной области 3947 довольно далеко от линии «Солнце-Земля». Такой выброс только краем может задеть Землю, что может вызвать слабую магнитную бурю 15 января.
