In the shadow of global institutions, austerity measures imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) across the Global South are a stark manifestation of neo-colonialism, producing structural violence and dismantling local economies. These policies, far from fostering stability, exacerbate extreme poverty, deepen economic dependency, privatize natural resources, and fuel political unrest in already vulnerable communities.
This past summer, only weeks apart, the world once again witnessed the consequences of austerity-driven governance. In Kenya 🇰🇪, youth-led protests against IMF-backed economic measures turned violent, resulting in at least 39 deaths, hundreds of injuries, 32 cases of enforced disappearances, and 627 arrests. Similarly, harsh state repression in Buenos Aires 🇦🇷 met waves of protestors challenging Javier Milei’s budget cuts as debates took place in the congressional building.
On the RI Newswire: How Kenya and Argentina illustrate the broader neo-colonial relationship between the IMF and borrower countries in the Global South, and how Progressive International’s ‘Program on the Construction of a New International Economic Order’ offers a concrete pathway for nations to collectively resist IMF hegemony and reclaim economic autonomy.

I've seen posters for protests saying, "don't bring weapons."
Well, guess what? The Nazis will. The police will. The Threepers, the Klan, the Proud Boys, the Patriot Fronters will.
In my years of activism, the safest protests were the ones where we openly carried rifles. The more rifles there were, the fewer problems we had.
During the George Floyd uprising, we had a (not visibly armed) march and the cops plowed their vehicles into the crowd and injured many. When we came back with rifles, the pigs didn't come near us. They ran away and cried on the radio about how scary the "scopes" on our rifles were.
