На выставке в 1874-м генерал-адьютант вон Кауфман прилюдно распёк Верещагина за сегодняшнюю картину. Художник вспоминал, что тот «заставлял сознаться, что именно русского солдата в такой позе, объеденного птицами, я не видел, и положительно торжествовал, когда я под ироническими улыбками его свиты сознался: да, не видел. «Ну, вот, очень рад», ответил он и повернулся ко мне спиною».
Раздосадованный Верещагин снял картину с выставки и уничтожил. Но несколько лет спустя написал новую на тот же сюжет.
