В 1957 году Евгений окончил Иркутский горно-металлургический институт, его распределили в Комплексную геологосъемочную экспедицию Читинского геологического управления. Он проработал в ней до пенсии, перерыв был только на три года, когда мужчина уехал в командировку в Монголию.
Со слов коллеги Владимира Павлыка, Зайков внедрил один из новых видов геологосъемки — АФГК-50 (аэрофотогеологическое картирование). В 1984 году его наградили орденом «За заслуги в разведке недр», в 1999 году мужчина получил звание заслуженного геолога Читинской области.
Зайков умер 19 октября, но о смерти стало известно только вчера, так как родственники похоронили его скромно.
