Данила попал в плен 19 августа. К дому, в котором он и другие срочники прятались, подъехали украинские солдаты. Парни испугались и залезли в кусты во дворе. Просидев в кустах несколько часов и решив, что ВСУ ушли, срочники начали пробираться назад в дом. Но там их уже ждали.
С помощью проекта «Хочу найти» родные разыскали Данилу. Благодаря движению «Наш выход» Данила смог по видеосвязи поговорить с мамой Татьяной. Женщина убедилась, что с ее сыном все в порядке.
14 сентября 2024 года Мотовилов Данила вернулся в Россию по обмену.
