Как писала в своей книге о режиссере великая Лотте Айснер, "фамилия Плумпе, очевидно, была невыносимой (plump (нем.) — здесь в значении «неуклюжий», «неотесанный».) для столь утонченного человека, как Мурнау".

Говорят, новую фамилию он выбрал из-за фундаментальных разногласий с отцом. ФВМ начал новую жизнь после путешествия в маленький баварский городок Мурнау-ам-Штаффельзе. Там одно время жили Василий Кандинский, Габриэле Мюнтер, Франц Марк, участники экспрессионистского движения «Синий всадник». Вот, к примеру, несколько картин Кандинского, написанных в 1908 году в этому чудо-месте.
