This ability to mix the public and the private, as well as the ability to use bots to engage with users has proved to be problematic. But it has "disclosed 0 bytes of user data to third parties, including governments," Telegram states on its website. Just days after Russia invaded Ukraine, Durov wrote that Telegram was "increasingly becoming a source of unverified information," and he worried about the app being used to "incite ethnic hatred." WhatsApp, a rival messaging platform, introduced some measures to counter disinformation when Covid-19 was first sweeping the world. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been a driving force in markets for the past few weeks.
