I promise we said some very intelligent things about the actual critical readings of the play and the implications of the gender bending but nobody on this channel wants to read the 2.5 essays on The Tempest I wrote over the course of my English degree so I will just say that there is so much incredible joy in seeing queer people finally proudly taking the stage in Shakespeare. Because Shakespeare has for too long been taken and weaponised and sterilised by fucking straight white men. A lot of Shakespeare is INHERENTLY queer and messy and fun but that's not how we're used to thinking about it because whatever works at the stage of its creation is always at risk of being appropriated by those it wasn't made about or for.
In Shakespeare's time, a (cis) woman WOULDN'T have been on stage. All female roles were played by prepubescent boys. Theatre was too unclean for a woman (or a woman was too unclean for theatre, depends on how honest the person is being).
And today we saw a production with Prospero as a woman and a non-binary Ariel. And yes, le wokisme, but let me celebrate the small victory of the fact that we could.

So, uh, whenever I hear about Telegram, it’s always in relation to something bad. What gives? For Oleksandra Tsekhanovska, head of the Hybrid Warfare Analytical Group at the Kyiv-based Ukraine Crisis Media Center, the effects are both near- and far-reaching. Russians and Ukrainians are both prolific users of Telegram. They rely on the app for channels that act as newsfeeds, group chats (both public and private), and one-to-one communication. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Telegram has remained an important lifeline for both Russians and Ukrainians, as a way of staying aware of the latest news and keeping in touch with loved ones. The Security Service of Ukraine said in a tweet that it was able to effectively target Russian convoys near Kyiv because of messages sent to an official Telegram bot account called "STOP Russian War." On February 27th, Durov posted that Channels were becoming a source of unverified information and that the company lacks the ability to check on their veracity. He urged users to be mistrustful of the things shared on Channels, and initially threatened to block the feature in the countries involved for the length of the war, saying that he didn’t want Telegram to be used to aggravate conflict or incite ethnic hatred. He did, however, walk back this plan when it became clear that they had also become a vital communications tool for Ukrainian officials and citizens to help coordinate their resistance and evacuations.
