Last Update:
I promise we said some very intelligent things about the actual critical readings of the play and the implications of the gender bending but nobody on this channel wants to read the 2.5 essays on The Tempest I wrote over the course of my English degree so I will just say that there is so much incredible joy in seeing queer people finally proudly taking the stage in Shakespeare. Because Shakespeare has for too long been taken and weaponised and sterilised by fucking straight white men. A lot of Shakespeare is INHERENTLY queer and messy and fun but that's not how we're used to thinking about it because whatever works at the stage of its creation is always at risk of being appropriated by those it wasn't made about or for.
In Shakespeare's time, a (cis) woman WOULDN'T have been on stage. All female roles were played by prepubescent boys. Theatre was too unclean for a woman (or a woman was too unclean for theatre, depends on how honest the person is being).
And today we saw a production with Prospero as a woman and a non-binary Ariel. And yes, le wokisme, but let me celebrate the small victory of the fact that we could.
