Корабли заходили прямо в Неву в центр города и там разгружались. Порт на месте заболоченной южной части дельты Невы начали строить в последнюю четверть XIX века. Немало для этого сделал такой человек как Путилов. В начале прошлого века появились железнодорожные подходы к нему, которые были усилены при СССР и наконец электрифицированы уже при Новой России. Примерно с нулевых годов Петербургский порт только растет по своему грузообороту, в этом ему сильно помогли государства Прибалтики.
