Бросается в глаза надстроенный в 1930-е четвёртый и пятый этажи. Изначально казармы были двухтажными; они появились в 1790-х, в царствование императора Павла Петровича. Он ввёл правило: построил казарму — освобождён от повинности принимать на постой солдат. На домах благодетелей армии висела доска — Свободенъ отъ постоя.
В 1830-е Жилярди и Соколов построили третий этаж и портик (восемь колонн, тосканский ордер, имперский орёл на фронтоне).
На старой фотографии видна главка полкового храма Пророка Осии, киот с иконой между окнами третьего этажа (на правом крыле) и звонница с пятью колоколами у главного входа. Ничего не сохранилось.
С 1960-х в казармах сидел влиятельный Госснаб СССР. Орла сменил герб Советского Союза, но в наше время орёл вернулся.
