I promise we said some very intelligent things about the actual critical readings of the play and the implications of the gender bending but nobody on this channel wants to read the 2.5 essays on The Tempest I wrote over the course of my English degree so I will just say that there is so much incredible joy in seeing queer people finally proudly taking the stage in Shakespeare. Because Shakespeare has for too long been taken and weaponised and sterilised by fucking straight white men. A lot of Shakespeare is INHERENTLY queer and messy and fun but that's not how we're used to thinking about it because whatever works at the stage of its creation is always at risk of being appropriated by those it wasn't made about or for.
In Shakespeare's time, a (cis) woman WOULDN'T have been on stage. All female roles were played by prepubescent boys. Theatre was too unclean for a woman (or a woman was too unclean for theatre, depends on how honest the person is being).
And today we saw a production with Prospero as a woman and a non-binary Ariel. And yes, le wokisme, but let me celebrate the small victory of the fact that we could.

In a statement, the regulator said the search and seizure operation was carried out against seven individuals and one corporate entity at multiple locations in Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar in Gujarat, Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Mumbai. Pavel Durov, Telegram's CEO, is known as "the Russian Mark Zuckerberg," for co-founding VKontakte, which is Russian for "in touch," a Facebook imitator that became the country's most popular social networking site. Since its launch in 2013, Telegram has grown from a simple messaging app to a broadcast network. Its user base isn’t as vast as WhatsApp’s, and its broadcast platform is a fraction the size of Twitter, but it’s nonetheless showing its use. While Telegram has been embroiled in controversy for much of its life, it has become a vital source of communication during the invasion of Ukraine. But, if all of this is new to you, let us explain, dear friends, what on Earth a Telegram is meant to be, and why you should, or should not, need to care. As the war in Ukraine rages, the messaging app Telegram has emerged as the go-to place for unfiltered live war updates for both Ukrainian refugees and increasingly isolated Russians alike. In the United States, Telegram's lower public profile has helped it mostly avoid high level scrutiny from Congress, but it has not gone unnoticed.
