The Security Service of Ukraine said in a tweet that it was able to effectively target Russian convoys near Kyiv because of messages sent to an official Telegram bot account called "STOP Russian War." Telegram boasts 500 million users, who share information individually and in groups in relative security. The fake Zelenskiy account reached 20,000 followers on Telegram before it was shut down, a remedial action that experts say is all too rare. Oleksandra Matviichuk, a Kyiv-based lawyer and head of the Center for Civil Liberties, called Durovβs position "very weak," and urged concrete improvements. Since its launch in 2013, Telegram has grown from a simple messaging app to a broadcast network. Its user base isnβt as vast as WhatsAppβs, and its broadcast platform is a fraction the size of Twitter, but itβs nonetheless showing its use.
