šPROMOTE LEAF TIMEā Telegram | DID YOU KNOW?
Date: | šPROMOTE LEAF TIMEā
At its heart, Telegram is little more than a messaging app like WhatsApp or Signal. But it also offers open channels that enable a single user, or a group of users, to communicate with large numbers in a method similar to a Twitter account. This has proven to be both a blessing and a curse for Telegram and its users, since these channels can be used for both good and ill. Right now, as Wired reports, the app is a key way for Ukrainians to receive updates from the government during the invasion. One thing that Telegram now offers to all users is the ability to ādisappearā messages or set remote deletion deadlines. That enables users to have much more control over how long people can access what youāre sending them. Given that Russian law enforcement officials are reportedly (via Insider) stopping people in the street and demanding to read their text messages, this could be vital to protect individuals from reprisals. If you initiate a Secret Chat, however, then these communications are end-to-end encrypted and are tied to the device you are using. That means itās less convenient to access them across multiple platforms, but you are at far less risk of snooping. Back in the day, Secret Chats received some praise from the EFF, but the fact that its standard system isnāt as secure earned it some criticism. If youāre looking for something that is considered more reliable by privacy advocates, then Signal is the EFFās preferred platform, although that too is not without some caveats. The last couple days have exemplified that uncertainty. On Thursday, news emerged that talks in Turkey between the Russia and Ukraine yielded no positive result. But on Friday, Reuters reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin said there had been some āpositive shiftsā in talks between the two sides. Telegram has gained a reputation as the āsecureā communications app in the post-Soviet states, but whenever you make choices about your digital security, itās important to start by asking yourself, āWhat exactly am I securing? And who am I securing it from?ā These questions should inform your decisions about whether you are using the right tool or platform for your digital security needs. Telegram is certainly not the most secure messaging app on the market right now. Its security model requires users to place a great deal of trust in Telegramās ability to protect user data. For some users, this may be good enough for now. For others, it may be wiser to move to a different platform for certain kinds of high-risk communications.
