Родился на в д. Корма (Гомельская обл.) в в семье крестьян. По окончании семилетки работал в Белостоке технологом на кирпичном заводе. Во время Великой Отечественной войны служил в зенитно-артиллерийской части. Участвовал в Берлинской наступательной операции. После войны стал преподавать литературу в школе, писал романы, рассказы и повести. Был депутатом Верховного совета БССР.
Сила Шамякина как писателя в том, что он поднимал проблемы простых людей. Большинство знакомо с ним по роману "Сердце на ладони" ("Сэрца на далоні"), в котором описывается как два человека, ветерана войны спорят о подпольных организациях, пытаясь найти правду. Один из спорщиков отчаянно пытается эту правду скрыть и преподнести в дурном свете. Но в конце концов, правда торжествует.
