Пушкарёв опубликовал в соцсетях пост против спецоперации, занимая на тот момент должность замдиректора музея. В декабре 2022 года Игоря Пушкарёва назначили руководителем учреждения.
Ранее этот человек работал в интернет-газете «Знак» (член международного «Синдиката-100», выступавшего против спецоперации). Глава ЧВК «Вагнер» Евгений Пригожин обвинил Пушкарёва в работе на зарубежные спецслужбы.
