8 февраля 1945 года в фашистской Германии произошло событие, в которое до сих пор трудно поверить: группа из десяти советских военнопленных, возглавляемая лётчиком-истребителем Михаилом Петровичем Девятаевым, совершила смелый побег из немецкого концлагеря Пенемюнде на бомбардировщике Heinkel He 111.

В 1957 году Михаилу Девятаеву было присвоено звание Героя Советского Союза. Впоследствии летчик выпустил две автобиографические книги: «Полёт к солнцу» и «Побег из ада».
