The success of Horatio Nelson came from two sources.
1. Nelson was audacious and rewarded his officers for being independently audacious. Nelson regularly held meetings with his subordinate officers to develop a plan that would purposefully cause chaos among his enemies and then developed contingency scenarios in case the chaos of the battle caused captains to make dangerous and independent decisions.
2. British crews were more thoroughly trained with better tactics. Depending on the source, British gun crews could fire roughly three cannonball rounds for every two French/Spanish rounds. In some cases, British crews could fire twice as quickly as their opponents. British gun crews were also trained to aim at their enemy’s gun deck in order to inflict maximum casualties and destroy the enemy’s ability to fight back. French and Spanish gun crew doctrine was to aim for their enemy’s sails and masts in order to slow their enemies down and potentially allow their ships to escape.

Nelson is most known for his three famous major victories.
The first of these battles was the Battle of Cape St Vincent (1797). In this battle, two Spanish fleets tried to combine and move north to threaten the British Channel. The British fleet’s line of battle tried to cut the Spanish fleets in half and crush each independently. However, unfavorable winds meant that the British fleet would miss their chance to crush the larger northwestern force. Captain Nelson of HMS Captain, located towards the back of the line, saw that the Spanish were going to escape unless they were stopped. Nelson disobeyed orders, broke out of the line of battle, turned his ship around, and cut off the Spanish fleet. Nelson’s Captain fought six superior warships off by himself, stalling for enough time to allow the rest of the British fleet to turn around and crush the Spanish.

The second of these battles was the Battle of the Nile (1798).
In 1798, Napoleon invaded Egypt was a massive French fleet with him to guard the entrance of the Nile. Nelson was promoted since Cape St Vincent and was responsible for quashing Napoleon’s fleet. The French fleet’s strategy was to position themselves along shallow shoals, forcing the British to form a line of battle. Since the French had superior firepower, they would win if the British and French lines were parallel to each other. Nelson didn’t fall for this trap. Instead, he sent his lighter ships to sail along the shoals while a second line of British ships fired from the north, where the French expected them to be. The French would be hit from two sides at the same time. Nelson also told his officers to take the initiative if they saw it and bob and weave through the French line to take out larger targets, if possible. This strategy worked out perfectly. The French fleet was destroyed and Napoleon’s army was stranded in Egypt.

Nelson’s third and most famous battle was the Battle of Trafalgar (1805).
Napoleon wished to combine his main French fleet with the fleet of his ally Spain and then threaten to invade the UK. Admiral Nelson’s plan was to go right for the combined Franco-Spanish fleet’s throat by lining the British fleet into two columns and “crossing the t”. While Nelson’s columns rushed the enemy’s line, they were fired upon for 40 minutes but could not fire back. Nelson famously signaled the message “England expects that every man will do his duty”. Once Nelson’s columns closed the gap, each ship individually engaged their enemies at close range. Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory sailed directly for the French flagship Bucenture. Nelson was mortally wounded in the battle but the individual superiority of independent British officers and British gun crews demolished the fleet. The British smashed their enemy’s line and caused them the frantically engage in losing close-quarters combat.

Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar smashed the combined fleets and ensured Napoleon could never threaten the British Channel for the rest of the Napoleonic Wars. Nelson also cemented the reputation of superior British cunning, skill, and training into the history books
