Caníbales preparando a sus víctimas
By Francisco de Goya, between 1800-1808.

After becoming deaf in the early 1790s, Goya began to depict dark themes.

These paintings depict scenes of prisons, madness, cruelty, witchcraft, rape, cold-blooded murder, and in some cases, scenes of cannibalism.

At the entrance to a cave, three naked men set about dismembering their victims. Two are crouched around the corpse, the third, facing the audience, is skinning the second victim, who is hung by the head.
Caníbales contemplando restos humanos
By Francisco de Goya, between 1800-1808.

Sitting naked on a rock, facing forward, with his legs wide apart, in the center of the canvas, a savage displays the hand and severed head of one of his victims, one of whose legs and ribs rests against the ground.

Three other tribe members sit naked on the ground and watch the proceedings, waiting for the meal to begin.

The background consists of a faceless group of cannibals.

A brass, spherical Helmholtz resonator based on his original design, circa 1890–1900

Helmholtz resonance, also known as wind throb, refers to the phenomenon of air resonance in a cavity, an effect named after the German physicist Hermann von Helmholtz. This type of resonance occurs when air is forced in and out of a cavity, causing the air inside to vibrate at a specific natural frequency. The principle is widely observable in everyday life, notably when blowing across the top of a bottle, resulting in a resonant tone.
