Экс-глава Марий Эл Леонид Маркелов руководил республикой с 17 января 2001 года по 6 апреля 2017 года. В 2021 году он был наказан судом на 13 лет лишения свободы в колонии, а также штрафом в размере 235 миллионов рублей по делу о получении взятки, злоупотреблении должностными полномочиями и незаконном хранении боеприпасов.
