این ویروس علاوه بر پرندگان، برای انسان نیز نرخ کشندگی بالایی دارد. در ۱۶ سال منتهی به ۲۰۲۰ تعداد ۵۳ چینی به آنفلوآنزای H5N1 مبتلا شده‌اند که ۳۱ نفرشان جان باخته‌اند (حدود ۶۰٪). شانسی که فعلاً وجود دارد این است که انسان چندان مستعد ابتلا به این بیماری نیست. از ۲۰۰۳ تا ۲۰۱۴ در ۱۵ کشور ۶۶۵ نفر مبتلا شده‌اند که ۳۹۲ نفرشان درگذشته‌اند اما این نگرانی وجود دارد که چنین ویروسی بر اثر جهش قابلیت سرایت بیشتر و در نتیجه شیوع گسترده پیدا کند. مهمترین سلاح بشر در مقابل بیماری‌های واگیردار، دانش است، دانشی که در مرحلۀ نخست بتواند پایۀ پیشگیری شود.
