На его глазах от обстрела погибли люди – эта ситуация стала последней каплей, тогда и принял решение идти на фронт. Заур выполнял задачи по разведке на территории Донецкого аэропорта, участвовал в боях за Углегорск, Дебальцево, Марьинку и на Авдеевском направлении.
Группа Заура Ханкишиева одной из первых заходила в Дебальцево и проводила его зачистку. Именно благодаря знаниям командира им удалось выйти оттуда живыми.
