Министр обороны Сингапура Нг Энг Хен, выступая сегодня в парламенте страны, заявил, что ВВС Сингапура ускорят программу F-35 и закупят 8 истребителей Lockheed Martin F-35A в дополнение к уже заказанным ранее 12 истребителей F-35B.
В 2019 году Сингапур направил заявку по линии американской программы межправительственных военных продаж Foreign Military Sales (FMS) на приобретение четырех самолетов Lockheed Martin F-35B, которые должны быть поставлены в страну к 2026 году. Запрос предусматривал твердый контракт на 4 самолёта и опционы на ещё восемь F-35B. Государственный департамент США в начале 2020 года одобрил продажу Сингапуру "до 12 самолётов" F-35B.
F-35B - модификация истребителя для Корпуса Морской пехоты США с возможностью совершать короткий взлёт и вертикальную посадку.
F-35A - вариант истребителя с обычным взлётом и посадкой (CTOL — Conventional take-off and landing).
