Стога Моне писал часто. Но в 1888-м он вывел этот сюжет на новый уровень. И в то же время нарушил один из канонов импрессионизма.
Тогда он брал на этюды два холста: один для солнечной погоды, второй для пасмурной. Но проведя у пары стогов час-другой, художник увидел, что освещение изменилось, и захотел зафиксировать новый эффект на тех же объектах.
С тех пор он брал с собой целую тележку с пачкой холстов. Шестичасовой стог, восьмичасовой, полуденный, послеобеденный, закатный… Когда солнце сдвигалось, менялась и картина, над которой работал Моне.
Здесь уже не было мимолётного впечатления, мгновенно пойманного лёгким движением кисти. Художник писал на пленэре сеанс за сеансом, а потом ещё и дорабатывал картину в мастерской. Он пытался поймать неуловимый свет.
«Стога» восхищали не только Кандинского. Эту серию полюбили в США. Именно американские коллекционеры купили большую часть работ цикла.
