Раніше командувачем був генерал-майор Андрій Ковальчук, який зараз очолює Військову академію в Одесі.
Шаповалов пройшов усі сходинки військової кар’єри від командира танкового взводу до командира 59 окремої мотопіхотної бригади імені Якова Гандзюка. У березні 2022 року отримав звання бригадного генерала.
