Как и Москва, город был основан Юрием Долгоруким, и звался по-началу Городец Мещерский. По одной из версии, между прочим, в Городце умер Александр Невский, когда ехал из Золотой Орды к себе домой.
В XV веке Касимов был передан Хану Касиму Василием II в благодарность за помощь в борьбе за власть. Оттуда и пошло нынешнее название. 200 лет город, по сути, был столицей относительно независимого государства - Касимовского ханства.
Меня очень порадовало, что историческое название сейчас сохранилось и не приобрело никакого революционно-советского флера. В городе до сих пор уживаются татарская и русская культура. Одно из самых знаменательных зданий - это мечеть XV века. Наверное, первая настолько древняя мечеть, которую я увидела в России.
Жаль, что транспортная доступность к Касимову не очень хорошая. Будь здесь железная дорога и скоростные поезда, конечно, все было бы иначе.
