У жовтні відзначається Місяць історії ЛГБТ, ідея якого належить викладачеві історії Родні Вілсону (Rodney Wilson). Він почав працювати над цією ідеєю, коли закінчував аспірантуру в Університеті Міссурі-Сент-Луїс у 1994 році.
У 1994 році Родні Вілсон двічі увійшов в історію.
Вперше це сталося після відвідин Музею Голокосту у Вашингтоні, коли Вілсон проводив урок з історичним та особистим контекстом для своїх учнів у середній школі Мелвілла.
